Create a UDL file

  1. On the client machine, create a new text document called "esha.udl".  (Make sure that file extensions aren't hidden or else this will look and behave like a text file.) You can right-click an empty area on the desktop or in another folder and choose New and then Text Document to create the file.
  2. Open the "esha.udl" file. This should open as a Properties tab dialog.
  3. Go to the "Provider" tab
  4. Select "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server"
  5. Press "Next" (Connection tab)
  6. Choose your server from the list (Generally this is "SERVERNAME\ESHA").  At this point is a good time to Test Connection to verify access to the server (but not yet to the database on that server).
  7. Select which type of authentication you will use:
    • Use Windows NT Integrated security ("Windows Authentication") [preferred].
    • Use a specific user name and password ("SQL Authentication")
  8. Press "Test Connection" to test the database connectivity so far.
  9. From the database list, select the database you wish to connect to (typically 'Gendata' for Genesis R&D)
  10. Press "Test Connection" to test the database connectivity yet again with the connection now to the database.
  11. The test should report as successful.  If not, retrace your steps as well as validate the credentials on the server.
